BRCGS - British Retail Consortium Global Standards for Food Safety

BRCGS - British Retail Consortium Global Standards for Food Safety is a globally recognized standard that sets the benchmark for food safety and quality in the food industry. Initially developed by the British Retail Consortium, it is now managed by BRCGS, a separate entity, and has evolved over nearly 25 years with input from industry experts.

The BRCGS Food Safety Standard specifies safety, quality, and operational criteria required for legal compliance and consumer protection within food manufacturing organizations. It provides a comprehensive framework for assessing a company’s premises, operational systems, and procedures through audits conducted by third-party certification bodies. Compliance with all modules of the standard is mandatory to achieve certification, and companies undergoing BRCGS audits are required to have access to an official copy of the standard.

Certification to the BRCGS Food Safety Standard demonstrates compliance with global best practices and builds trust with retailers, manufacturers, and consumers worldwide. The certification process involves self-assessment, audits conducted by registered certification bodies, and continual improvement of food safety management systems to meet evolving regulations and industry needs. Additional modules can be added to address specific customer or regional requirements, reducing costs associated with multiple audits.

By achieving certification, companies not only improve their operational efficiency and profitability but also enhance their reputation in the global market. The standard is now in its 9th edition, published on August 1, 2022, which continues to evolve to address new challenges and maintain the highest levels of safety and quality.
