ISO 45002 - Guidance for Implementing 45001

ISO 45002 provides general guidelines for implementing ISO 45001:2018, the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Management Systems standard. Published in February 2023 as ISO 45002:2023, Occupational health and safety management systems — General guidelines for the implementation of ISO 45001:2018, it was developed by ISO/TC 283, the Technical Committee for OH&S Management.

The standard provides practical guidance to help organizations establish, implement, maintain, and continually improve their OH&S management systems. It supports organizations in identifying hazards, assessing risks, and implementing controls to prevent workplace accidents and health issues. ISO 45002 complements ISO 45001 by offering real-life examples of how organizations have successfully applied its principles, while ensuring these examples are non-prescriptive.

Key aspects include:

  • Guidance on setting safety policies and conducting risk assessments.
  • Strategies for fostering employee participation in health and safety practices.
  • Recommendations for monitoring, measuring, and improving safety performance through audits and regular reviews.

ISO 45002 emphasizes consistency with ISO 45001, avoiding the addition of new requirements or interpretations. Its guidance uses "should" to align with the original intent of ISO 45001 while maintaining flexibility for diverse organizational contexts.

This standard contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals:

  • Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being
  • Goal 5: Gender Equality
  • Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities.

By following ISO 45002, organizations can enhance their safety culture, meet regulatory requirements, and promote continuous improvement in OH&S management, regardless of size or industry. For more information, visit the official ISO 45002:2023 page.
