Textile Exchange

Textile Exchange is a global nonprofit that drives positive climate and nature outcomes in the textile and fashion industry. It focuses on reducing the environmental impact of raw material production through trusted standards, credible data, and industry partnerships.

Textile Exchange is the owner of several widely used voluntary sustainability standards, including:

  • Global Recycled Standard (GRS)

  • Recycled Claim Standard (RCS)

  • Organic Content Standard (OCS)

  • Responsible Wool Standard (RWS)

  • Responsible Down Standard (RDS)

  • Responsible Alpaca Standard (RAS)

  • Responsible Mohair Standard (RMS)

These standards vary in scope but cover key topics such as content claims, chemical restrictions, animal welfare, environmental protection, and social criteria. Certification to these standards is performed by approved third-party certification bodies.

Textile Exchange also runs the Preferred Fiber and Materials Matrix, a benchmarking and evaluation tool to help brands make informed sourcing decisions. It classifies materials based on environmental integrity and data quality, promoting continuous improvement in material choices.

The organization’s strategic direction is guided by its Climate+ goal—a commitment to help the industry reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 45% by 2030 across the production of fibers and raw materials. The “+” recognizes that climate action is linked to outcomes such as water conservation, soil health, and biodiversity.

Textile Exchange also facilitates industry alignment and transparency through programs like the Materials Benchmark, as well as traceability solutions and policy engagement efforts.
