Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)

The Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) is an independent nonprofit that advances sustainability through forest-focused collaboration. Its work spans four main areas: standards, conservation, community, and education. SFI brings together the forest sector, brand owners, Indigenous communities, conservation groups, educators, landowners, local governments, and researchers to support responsible forest management and address local and global sustainability challenges.
SFI’s mission is to advance sustainability through forest-focused collaboration, and its vision is a world that values and benefits from sustainably managed forests. These goals are supported by a culture that embraces innovation, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. SFI also upholds strong commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEI), as well as to respectful and collaborative relationships with Indigenous Peoples, including recognition of their rights and traditional knowledge.
SFI is best known for its certification programs, which include the Forest Management Standard, Fiber Sourcing Standard, Chain-of-Custody Standard, and Certified Sourcing Standard. These standards promote responsible forestry, transparent sourcing, and sustainable supply chains primarily across the United States and Canada. In addition, SFI has developed the Urban and Community Forest Sustainability Standard to support healthier, more resilient urban environments through sustainable tree management in cities and towns.
As expressed in its 2025–2030 Strategic Direction, SFI intends to increase the impact and relevance of its standards, expand conservation outcomes, strengthen community well-being and workforce development, and promote sustainability education - particularly through its Project Learning Tree initiative. These priorities guide how SFI responds to emerging environmental and social challenges while fostering practical solutions through its growing network of partners.
