Slovak National Accreditation Service (SNAS)
Slovak National Accreditation Service (Slovenská národná akreditačná služba, SNAS) is Slovakia's national accreditation body and the sole organization authorized to accredit conformity assessment bodies in the country. Established as a public institution under Slovak law, it is responsible for assessing and formally recognizing the competence of organizations that perform testing, calibration, inspection, certification, validation and verification activities. Through its work, SNAS helps ensure that conformity assessment results produced in Slovakia are trusted both nationally and internationally.
SNAS forms a key part of Slovakia's quality infrastructure alongside institutions responsible for standardization, metrology and regulatory oversight. It provides independent accreditation of testing, calibration and medical laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies, validation and verification bodies, and proficiency testing providers. By confirming that these organizations meet internationally accepted requirements, SNAS helps support confidence in products, services and regulatory controls across the economy.
International cooperation is central to the organization's activities. SNAS has been a member of the European co-operation for Accreditation (EA) since 1998, the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) since 1996, and the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) since 1997. It also participates in the Forum of Accreditation and Licensing Bodies (FALB), which supports the European Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS). Through these memberships and multilateral recognition arrangements, accreditation granted by SNAS is accepted throughout Europe and widely recognized around the world, helping reduce technical barriers to trade and strengthening confidence in Slovak conformity assessment services.
As Slovakia's national accreditation authority, SNAS represents the country within the European accreditation framework established under Regulation (EC) No. 765/2008. It remains a signatory to EA, ILAC and IAF multilateral recognition arrangements covering calibration, testing, medical laboratories, inspection, proficiency testing, product certification, management system certification, personnel certification, and validation and verification. These arrangements enable results issued by accredited organizations in Slovakia to gain wider international acceptance.
In addition to accreditation, SNAS operates Slovakia's Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) monitoring program, which helps ensure the quality and international acceptance of non-clinical health and environmental safety studies. The organization conducts inspections and verification activities related to OECD principles of Good Laboratory Practice and represents Slovakia within international systems supporting laboratory quality and regulatory acceptance of data.
By ensuring the competence and impartiality of laboratories, inspection bodies, certification bodies and other conformity assessment organizations, SNAS supports consumer confidence, regulatory effectiveness, international trade and the overall credibility of Slovakia's quality infrastructure.
