Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing of the Slovak Republic (ÚNMS SR)

The Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing of the Slovak Republic (Úrad pre normalizáciu, metrológiu a skúšobníctvo Slovenskej republiky, ÚNMS SR) is Slovakia's national standards body and the central government authority responsible for technical standardization, metrology, quality, conformity assessment, accreditation policy, and the free movement of goods. Established in 1993 following the creation of the independent Slovak Republic, it develops and implements national policy across these areas while helping ensure alignment with European and international requirements. Through its activities, the office supports economic competitiveness, innovation, consumer protection, fair trade and the effective functioning of Slovakia's quality infrastructure.

As the national standards body, ÚNMS SR oversees the development, adoption, publication and distribution of Slovak Technical Standards (STN). It represents Slovakia in international and European standardization and serves as the national member of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). It also represents Slovakia within the European standardization system through participation in the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). These responsibilities were previously carried out by the Slovak Standards Institute (Slovenský ústav technickej normalizácie, SÚTN), whose functions were later incorporated into ÚNMS SR. Through its international memberships, Slovak experts contribute to the development of international and European standards while ensuring their implementation at the national level.

The office's responsibilities extend well beyond standardization. ÚNMS SR develops national policy for metrology, quality and conformity assessment, coordinates activities related to accreditation policy, and helps ensure the free movement of goods within the European single market. It participates in the preparation and implementation of European legislation within its areas of competence and coordinates Slovakia's involvement in numerous European regulatory and technical harmonization initiatives. These activities help create a framework in which testing, inspection, certification, accreditation and other conformity assessment activities can operate effectively and gain recognition across borders.

A key part of the office's work is strengthening Slovakia's quality infrastructure, which includes standardization, metrology, accreditation, conformity assessment and related regulatory systems. The institution's current strategic framework, the State Policy Concept for 2025-2028, identifies these fields as important tools for supporting innovation, competitiveness, sustainable economic growth, international cooperation and the modernization of public administration. The office also promotes quality-management approaches and initiatives designed to improve the performance of both public and private-sector organizations.

ÚNMS SR serves as a bridge between government, industry, conformity assessment bodies, academic institutions and technical experts. Through technical committees, consultations and coordination mechanisms, it enables stakeholders to participate in the development of standards and technical regulations. The office also provides access to Slovak Technical Standards through its STN Online platform and supports the dissemination of technical and regulatory information to businesses, public authorities and other interested parties.

Because it combines responsibilities for standardization, metrology, quality, conformity assessment, accreditation policy and market harmonization within a single institution, ÚNMS SR occupies a unique position in Slovakia's public administration and plays a central role in ensuring that the country's technical and quality infrastructure remains aligned with European and international systems.
