Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (KATS)

The Korean Agency for Technology and Standards (국가기술표준원, KATS) is the national standards body of the Republic of Korea, operating under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE). Established in 1883 as the Analysis and Testing Laboratory of the Mint Office, KATS has evolved through multiple reorganizations before assuming its current name in 2013. It develops and enforces national standards, manages the Korean Industrial Standards (KS) system, and oversees legal metrology, product safety, and conformity assessment to enhance industrial competitiveness and public safety.
KATS represents Korea internationally as a member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and an active participant in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC). Through these memberships, KATS aligns Korean standards with global practices and contributes to the harmonization of international standards, ensuring Korean industries can compete in global markets.
To support its national mandate, KATS works with specialized organizations such as the Korean Standards Association (KSA), which operates under its supervision to implement certain certification and information-service functions related to the KS system. This collaboration ensures the consistent application of national standards across industries. For more information, please visit its official website.
