Icelandic Standards (IST)

Icelandic Standards (IST) is the national body responsible for standardization in Iceland. Established to oversee the development, implementation, and dissemination of standards across various sectors, IST works to ensure that Icelandic products, services, and practices meet international benchmarks for quality and safety. The organization collaborates closely with European and global standardization bodies, enabling Icelandic industries to participate in the international market while maintaining compliance with local needs and conditions. IST is a member of the European standards organizations CENCENELEC and ETSI  and of the international standards organizations ISO and IEC.

IST operates under the Ministry of Industries and Innovation, providing a framework for creating standards that apply to everything from construction and energy to information technology and consumer goods. The organization is tasked with coordinating standardization activities within Iceland, involving stakeholders from the private sector, public institutions, and academia. By doing so, IST ensures that the standards it develops and adopts reflect the interests and needs of the Icelandic society, contributing to economic growth, environmental sustainability, and public welfare.

In addition to its standardization work, IST provides a range of services to support businesses and professionals in understanding and implementing standards. This includes offering access to standards, conducting training sessions, and providing consultation services. IST's mission is to promote the use of standards as tools for innovation and competitiveness, helping Icelandic enterprises to thrive both locally and internationally.
