Hellenic Organization for Standardization (ELOT)

The Hellenic Organization for Standardization (Ελληνικός Οργανισμός Τυποποίησης – ELOT) is Greece’s national standardization body, responsible for developing and adopting standards across all sectors of the economy. Established in 1976 under Law 372, it is the sole authority for the preparation, approval, publication, and distribution of Greek standards. Its work is based on a consensus-driven process involving stakeholders from both the public and private sectors, ensuring that standards reflect broad agreement and practical needs across industry, services, and public administration.

ELOT participates in international and European standardization systems, representing Greece in organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), and the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) Through this participation, it contributes to the development of international standards while ensuring that national interests are represented. It also adopts European and international standards at the national level, supporting compatibility, market access, and the transfer of technical knowledge.

The development of standards is carried out through a large network of technical committees and working groups, bringing together more than 1,100 experts from industry, academia, and public institutions. In addition to standardization, ELOT supports organizations through technical information, training, and access to national, European, and international standards, helping them apply standards in practice. Its activities aim to improve the quality of products and services, strengthen competitiveness, and support innovation across the Greek economy.

ELOT has undergone several institutional changes over time, including its transformation into a joint-stock company in 1997 and its integration into the National System of Quality Infrastructure (ESYP), which brings together Greece’s standardization, accreditation, and metrology functions, in 2013. Under recent legislative changes in 2025, it operates as a distinct legal entity, reinforcing its role as the official technical advisor to the state on standardization matters.  For more information, please visit the Hellenic Organization for Standardization official website.
