Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards (DNTMS)
The Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards (DNTMS) is Fiji's national standards body and operates as a department within the government ministry responsible for trade. Established under the Trade Standards and Quality Control Act 1992, it develops, adopts, and maintains national standards, administers the national measurement system, and supports product quality, consumer protection, and fair measurement in trade. DNTMS also prepares technical specifications, handbooks, and other publications, and develops standards through technical committees representing government, industry, academia, consumers, and other stakeholders.
DNTMS participates actively in the international standards and metrology community. It is Fiji's member body in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and a member of the Pacific Area Standards Congress (PASC). The department is also affiliated with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), Australia's National Measurement Institute (NMI), and the Asia Pacific Metrology Programme (APMP). Through ISO, DNTMS participates as an observing member in nine technical committees and takes part in ISO policy development committees, enabling Fiji to contribute to the development of international standards.
The department maintains Fiji's national system of units and standards of measurement, helping ensure accurate measurements in trade and protecting consumers and businesses. It also oversees mandatory and voluntary standards, while many Fiji Standards have been adopted or adapted from Australian Standards under long-standing cooperation with Standards Australia.
