Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing (ÚNMZ)

The Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing (Úřad pro technickou normalizaci, metrologii a státní zkušebnictví, ÚNMZ) is the central state authority of the Government of the Czech Republic responsible for technical standardization, metrology, state testing, and the harmonization of technical regulations. Established in 1993 under Act No. 20/1993 Coll., ÚNMZ is an administrative body under the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Since 2018, the operational tasks of drafting, publishing, and distributing Czech technical standards have been delegated to the Czech Agency for Standardization (ČAS), while ÚNMZ retains oversight and regulatory responsibility in this field.

ÚNMZ represents the Czech Republic at the state level in international and European standardization organizations such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), and the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). It holds the formal membership and legal responsibility on behalf of the state, while ČAS performs the operational work of technical committees, standard drafting, and publication.

In addition to its role in standardization oversight, ÚNMZ ensures the functioning of state metrology, supervises state testing within the framework of Czech and EU law, and coordinates technical regulation harmonization to support safety, consumer protection, and compliance with international obligations. By linking government policy with specialized institutions such as ČAS, the Czech Metrology Institute (ČMI), and the Czech Accreditation Institute (ČIA), ÚNMZ plays a central role in maintaining a coherent and internationally connected quality infrastructure.
