The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC)

The Standards and Metrology Institute for Islamic Countries (SMIIC) is an international organization that aims to promote cooperation among member states in the fields of standards, metrology, and conformity assessment. Established in 2010 under the auspices of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), SMIIC serves to facilitate trade between its member countries by harmonizing standards, ensuring product quality, safety, and interoperability across national borders. SMIIC’s member states include Afghanistan, Algeria, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d'Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Kyrgyz Republic, Lebanon, Libya, Malaysia, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Senegal, Somalia, Sudan, Suriname, Tajikistan, Tunisia, Türkiye, Uganda, United Arab Emirates, Uzbekistan, and Yemen. Observer countries are Bosnia & Herzegovina, Russia, and Thailand.

SMIIC's primary mission is to develop and harmonize standards that reflect the needs and priorities of Islamic countries, fostering the economic integration and development of its member states. This includes the promotion of a unified approach towards standards and technical regulations, which helps eliminate technical barriers to trade and enhances the global competitiveness of products from member countries. SMIIC covers a broad spectrum of sectors, including food and agriculture, textiles, and information technology, among others.

The institute actively collaborates with international and regional standards bodies to align its standards with global best practices. This collaboration extends to partnerships with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), among others. Such partnerships are crucial for ensuring that the standards adopted are globally accepted and facilitate smoother trade across international markets.

SMIIC also emphasizes the importance of metrology and conformity assessment, providing a framework that supports the accreditation of testing and calibration laboratories, certification bodies, and inspection bodies. This comprehensive approach ensures that products manufactured in Islamic countries meet international quality and safety standards, thereby enhancing consumer confidence both domestically and internationally.
