Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON)

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) is Nigeria's statutory body responsible for standardizing and regulating the quality of products nationwide, covering both locally manufactured and imported goods. Established in 1971, SON’s mandate has been refined through several amendments, with a major update in 2015 that expanded its functions, strengthened regulatory powers, and increased penalties for violations. SON operates under the oversight of the Federal Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Investment and is governed by the Nigerian Standards Council, which supervises policy development and financial management.

Core Mandate and Functions

SON’s mandate covers the establishment, approval, and declaration of standards for products, materials, processes, and structures to ensure quality and consumer safety. Its key functions include certifying products, with the SONCAP Program for imports and the MANCAP Program for local goods; overseeing weights and measures calibration and verification; and enforcing public health and safety standards to prevent substandard goods from entering the market.

International Collaboration

SON actively collaborates with international standards organizations, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), to align Nigerian standards with global best practices. SON’s participation in ISO includes active involvement in 69 Technical Committees as a Participating Member and 51 as an Observing Member, ensuring that Nigerian products comply with international standards, enhancing the global competitiveness of Nigerian industries and facilitating easier access to international markets.

Regulatory Authority, Public Awareness, and Economic Impact

Under the SON Act of 2015, SON holds broad regulatory powers to set and enforce standards, regulate quality marks, and operate testing and research labs. Through training and awareness programs, SON educates stakeholders on compliance and standards, supporting economic growth by enhancing the quality and competitiveness of Nigerian products, facilitating exports, and attracting foreign investment. Additionally, SON offers advisory services to government bodies, contributing to sustainable industrial development in Nigeria.
