Standard Norway (SN)

Standard Norway (Standard Norge, SN) is responsible for the development, publication, and management of standards in Norway, covering a wide array of societal areas. Founded as the Norwegian Industrial Federation's Standardization Committee in 1923, it initially operated under the Norwegian Confederation of Industry before becoming the Norwegian Standardization Association in 1931. Standard Norway, as it is known today, was established in 2003 following a merger of four key standardization entities. Operating as a private, non-profit organization, it reinvests all income into further standardization work, releasing approximately 1,500 new Norwegian Standards (NS) annually. Standard Norway also licenses Standard Online AS to handle the marketing and sales of these standards, with an 80% ownership stake.

Standard Norway is Norway's member body for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), actively participating in European and international standardization across all areas except telecommunication and electrotechnology. Through these memberships, it engages over 2,000 experts from business, public authorities, and consumer groups in international standardization work, which contributes an estimated CHF 27 million in voluntary resources annually. Standard Norway’s international work underscores Norway’s influence and commitment to setting robust, applicable standards on a global stage.

The broader standardization network in Norway includes five organizations, one of which is Standard Online AS, a joint venture between Standard Norway and the Norwegian Electrotechnical Committee, managing sales, marketing, and offering related advisory services for standards. Standards Digital, owned primarily by Standard Norway, provides digital solutions to ensure efficient distribution, management, and quality control of standards documents. Together, these organizations support Norwegian society, providing essential standards for sectors like environmental management, safety, and industry.
