Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI)
The Sri Lanka Standards Institution (SLSI) is Sri Lanka’s national standards body, responsible for standardization and related activities that support quality, safety, and reliability across the national economy. It was originally established as the Bureau of Ceylon Standards under the Bureau of Ceylon Standards Act No. 38 of 1964 and was reconstituted as SLSI under the Sri Lanka Standards Institution Act No. 6 of 1984. SLSI functions under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Research (MSTR) and is governed by a council appointed by the Minister under the Act.
SLSI represents Sri Lanka in international and regional standardization and conformity-related cooperation. It is Sri Lanka’s official member body of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), acting as the national focal point for both organizations. SLSI also serves as the national enquiry point under the World Trade Organization (WTO) Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT), supporting transparency and information exchange on standards and technical regulations. At the regional level, SLSI participates in the South Asian Regional Standards Organization (SARSO), contributing to the development and harmonization of South Asian standards and representing Sri Lanka in regional governance structures.
Operationally, SLSI develops Sri Lanka Standards through a consensus-based process involving government bodies, industry, consumers, academia, and technical experts. Its policy is to align national standards with international standards wherever practicable, particularly in areas supporting trade facilitation, consumer safety, and health. Standards formulation is led through dedicated scientific and engineering standardization functions. In addition to standards development, SLSI operates a range of conformity-assessment and quality-related services, including product certification under the SLS Marks Scheme for both local and overseas manufacturers, organic product certification, and supporting technical services such as testing, measurement, quality assurance, information dissemination, and training. Further information is available on its official website.
