Nigeria National Accreditation System (NiNAS)

The Nigeria National Accreditation System (NiNAS) is Nigeria’s national accreditation body, recognized by the Federal Government to accredit conformity assessment bodies (CABs) such as laboratories (testing, medical testing, and calibration), inspection bodies, and certification bodies. NiNAS was first established in 2015 as a not-for-profit organization and, in November 2019, was re-incorporated as a Company limited by Guarantee. It serves as Nigeria’s sole national accreditation body, mandated to accredit conformity assessment activities.

NiNAS was established under the National Quality Infrastructure Project (NQIP) for Nigeria, which aims to develop the standards and quality control bodies necessary to enhance the quality and marketability of Nigerian goods and services both domestically and internationally.

NiNAS’s mission is to support national development through accessible and cost-effective accreditation services that ensure CABs operate at the highest standards of competence and impartiality. This mission facilitates trade within Nigeria and abroad and enhances the competitiveness of Nigerian businesses by assuring that their products and services meet internationally recognized standards.

Accreditation by NiNAS ensures that Nigerian businesses can gain global market access, with services provided by accredited bodies recognized for their technical competence and adherence to quality standards. This process reduces the need for multiple inspections, thereby streamlining trade and improving efficiency across various sectors.

As part of its international alignment, NiNAS is a Full Member of the African Accreditation Cooperation (AFRAC) and an Associate Member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC). It is also a member of the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and collaborates with other international organizations to promote mutual recognition and reduce trade barriers.

The governance structure of NiNAS includes a Board of Directors and an Accreditation Policy Advisory Committee, both of which ensure transparent, fair, and impartial operations. Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Accreditation and departmental heads manage accreditation operations, with support from contract assessors and technical experts who form assessment teams.

Through its role in accreditation, international partnerships, and adherence to global best practices, NiNAS fosters trust in Nigerian products and services, strengthening consumer confidence, supporting the economy, and ensuring the health and safety of citizens.
