General Bureau of Standards (DGN)

The General Bureau of Standards (DGN) in Mexico, known in Spanish as Dirección General de Normas (DGN), is a governmental body responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of standards within the country. Operating under the Ministry of Economy, DGN ensures that products, services, processes, and systems meet established national and international standards. Its mission is to facilitate trade, enhance quality, and protect consumer safety by promoting standardization and conformity assessment procedures. The bureau plays a critical role in fostering economic development and competitiveness through the alignment of Mexican standards with global benchmarks.

The DGN collaborates closely with various national and international organizations to maintain and update the standards. These collaborations include partnerships with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners, among others. The bureau also engages with industry stakeholders, academia, and consumer groups to ensure that the standards are relevant, up-to-date, and effectively address the needs of the market. By participating in international standardization activities, DGN helps to harmonize Mexican standards with those of other countries, facilitating smoother trade and regulatory compliance.

Furthermore, the DGN is instrumental in the certification and accreditation processes within Mexico. It oversees the implementation of conformity assessment procedures, including testing, inspection, and certification, to ensure that products and services comply with the established standards. The bureau also works in tandem with the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA) and other regulatory bodies to maintain a robust quality infrastructure. Through its efforts, the DGN helps to safeguard public health and safety, enhance consumer protection, and support sustainable development.
