Czech Agency for Standardization (ČAS)

The Czech Agency for Standardization (Česká agentura pro standardizaci, ČAS) is a state-funded organization established in 2017 by the Czech Office for Standards, Metrology and Testing (ÚNMZ) under Act No. 265/2017 Coll. It began operating on 1 January 2018, when it assumed from ÚNMZ all activities related to the creation, publication, and distribution of Czech technical standards. ČAS is headquartered in Prague and functions as the country’s operational body for technical standardization under the supervision of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

ČAS participates in the practical work of international and European standardization on behalf of the Czech Republic, coordinating national technical committees and preparing Czech positions within the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). While ÚNMZ retains the state’s formal membership in these organizations, ČAS ensures Czech experts and stakeholders are directly involved in the drafting and adoption of European and international standards into the national system.

In addition to standardization, ČAS manages related services such as the sale of standards, certification of trusted electronic document systems (eSSL), and training for professionals working with standards. It also publishes annual reports on its activities and continues traditions such as the Vladimír List Awards for contributions to technical standardization. By carrying out the day-to-day work of drafting and publishing standards while operating under ÚNMZ’s legal authority, ČAS ensures that Czech technical standardization is fully integrated into the European and international system.
